Area 3 Bi-annual Event

Darlington District was host for the fourth bi-annual Area 3 event which was held in Durham Cathedral on June 7th 2005. All five districts, Darlington, Cumbria, Newcastle, Scotland and Shetland were represented on a very exciting and happy day when the sun shone brightly even though the inside of the awesome building was quite cool.

Approximately 430 women and 20 men gathered in Durham Cathedral to enjoy a Service of Celebration which included Holy Communion. Revd Graham Carter, Chairman of the Darlington District, presided at the service and the address was given by Revd Alison Wilkinson of Carville Methodist Church. The Area 3 representative, Christine Wilson, opened the service with a welcome to all, especially those who had travelled from Shetland, and then led the congregation in prayer. Ladies, under the leadership of Anne Collinson, Vice-President of the Newcastle District Women's Network gave a presentation of movement and mime. Ladies from the Darlington District Women's Network had formed a choir, under the leadership of Joan Turnbull. The Prayers of Intercession were led by four of the District Women's Network Presidents, Glenda Burchell of the Darlington District, Joan Wager of the Cumbria District, Rae Roe of the Scotland District and Edna Poplar of the Shetland District. Newcastle District Younger Women's President, Paula Rogers and the Connexional president, Elaine Turner were also in attendance and assisted in the administration of Holy Communion.

The service was followed by a picnic lunch in the sun drenched grounds of the Cathedral and after lunch 276 of the 450 enjoyed specialist tours of the Historic Building which is such an integral part of our Christian Heritage.

The day concluded with a buffet tea, which had been prepared by the very capable and willing hands at Elvet Methodist Church.
