[Eco- Church Award Willington Open Door Church
]
Willington Open Door Church, in the West Durham Circuit was awarded Eco Gold award by ARocha on 9th May 2025.
Our journey started June 14th 2022 when we attained the Bronze award, by March the following year we had achieved our Silver.
The eco journey continues as we work towards The Methodist's carbon net zero target in 2030. All our activities in the building, grounds and allotment are viewed through the eco lens. This is built upon teamwork and reaching out to our community.
Since the award we have had an eco-fair where charities such as Groundwork, Health and Wellbeing, CPRE, a countryside charity, who kindly supplied a writeup in the Northern Echo contributed towards the event.
We are forming an eco-calendar where national, international events in which people can participate are programmed.
The allotment work generates a feeling of well being amongst those who are planting, tidying and harvesting and the food is donated to our food scheme providing fresh produce to local households in need.
We have 2 other churches in the Circuit that are working towards eco awards and we are hoping that other churches are encouraged to follow our path and achieve an eco-award for the whole Circuit.
This award focuses on God's creation and our stewardship for future generations. It is a series of steps generated by faith. In the year of stories we want you to be encouraged by our story.
